What Genomic Research Actually Found

Comparative genomic studies on textured hair populations have identified variation in genes that influence follicle shape, keratin expression, and the structural proteins that determine how a strand curls as it grows. The follicle itself is the key: an asymmetric, curved follicle produces a curved strand, and the degree of asymmetry is under genetic control. This is why curl pattern often runs in families with striking consistency, and why two people can follow an identical routine and get very different results.

Why This Matters Beyond Curiosity

Genetic variation doesn't stop at curl shape. The same research points to differences in strand density, cross-sectional shape, and even natural resistance to certain types of damage.
